Waldemar Karwowski has been specializing in decorative painting and historical restoration since 1980. Originally from Europe, Waldemar immigrated to the United States from Poland in 1987. He attended the Old Lyme Art Academy where he was a part time student for five years and spent one year studying decorative painting at the "ipedec" institute in Paris, France. As an artist he specializes in decorative painting and historical restoration in both the United States and in Europe. Some of his most notable accomplishments are: the restoration of the sanctuary at Our Lady of Fatima in, Fatima, Portugal, his work as one of restoration artists who worked on the interior restoration of Saint Patrick's Cathedral in New York City, and his restoration of the entire interior of Saint Stanislaus' church in New Haven, CT. 

Waldemar has recently joined the restoration team at The New England Carousel Museum. In July of 2002 he began the first step in an intensive face lift of the 88-year-old Bushnell Park Carousel in downtown Hartford. Waldemar began the process of sanding, filling, painting and gold leafing the rounding boards, shields and the center core structure of the carousel. This past summer's initial project was the introduction to a full restoration of the Bushnell Park Carousel.

Waldemar works on private and public commissions including homes, churches, and public buildings. He recently completed a commission by the Bushnell Theatre in Hartford, CT. In addition to his restoration work, Waldemar works on creative new designs in decorative painting and faux finish techniques.

Waldemar recently exhibited his work at the Carousel Museum. His show, “The Art of Decorative Painting and Faux Finishes,” ran from April-September 2002. The show displayed a sampling of Karwowski’s creative decorative painting techniques in drawing and gold leaf and faux finishes that represented marble, wood or Venetian plaster textures. Also featured were historically influenced subjects on oil on canvas that demonstrated the artist’s extraordinary craftsmanship.
